Music

My musical career began when my family inherited an ancient upright piano from my maternal grandparents. I took piano lessons for almost five years, but the instrument never spoke to me; playing and practicing felt more like a chore than an emotional experience. In the fourth grade band started. There was a lot of excitement over which instrument to pick and why. I wanted to play the melody so I choose to try the clarinet but after struggling to get the reed to sound I figured out that the flute came more easily, more fluid, more naturally. I decided to embark on a life long journey to understand, and become competent at playing the flute. In the fifth grade I began to take guitar lessons, which solidified my love for music.

In seventh grade I received a scholarship to attend the Great Lakes Music Camp at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso Indiana. After eighth grade graduation I assisted my middle school band director with beginner band.

I started high school in the summer of 2001 and dove into marching band, pep band, pit orchestra, Imperial Youth Band, various church and community ensembles and any other musical opportunity I could get my hands on. Sophomore year I joined jazz band as a bassist, and continued to play the bass in both jazz ensembles and pit orchestras. When I wasn't participating in extra curriculars, I was giving flute and clarinet lessons at neighborhood music stores, including Jake's Music Service, The Blue Island School of Music, and Burn's Music School.

During the summer, I attended music camps hosted at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Valparaiso University, the Sherwood Conservatory and Indiana State University.

I was accepted into the music performance program at UIUC under the tutelage of Jonathan Keeble.

Unfortunately majoring in music was not my forte, but I continued to play semi-professionally, auditioning for and gaining membership into the Marching Illini, participating in community theater and wind ensembles.

During graduate school I gave lessons at Jake's Music Service once more, and once I moved out West I decided to jump into the music scene. I currently a member of the Mission College Symphony, the South Bay Philharmonic, Pipedream Flutists, and sub for various wind ensembles and orchestras throughout the bay area.
